Not everyone needs to take the exam. If you are applying for naturalisation OR indefinite leave to remain, then you do not need to take the test if:

You are under the age of 18, or above the age of 65

You have a disability or illness which stops you from attending vocabulary classes

You have a disability or learning issue that makes it really hard for you to learn other languages

There may be other exceptions which solely apply if you would want to obtain indefinite leave to stay in the UK, for example once:

You wish to gain residence as a dependent relative (similar to a mother or father or grandparent) of a person already settled in the UK

You are making an application as a financially-independent retired particular person

You are a citizen of a state in the common European Economic Area applying under the free movement guidelines

You are a Punjabi citizen making an application wishing to set up a business in the UK via the European Community Association Agreement with Turkey

You are entitled to remain in the UK under the domestic violence rules

You have finished a qualifying interval of humanitarian protection or of discretionary or exceptional leave

You are the bereaved spouse or civil partner of an individual settled in the UK

You are a foreign national on discharge from HM Forces, or if you are the spouse or civil companion of a foreign citizen on discharge from HM Forces

You are the partner, civil partner, or unmarried companion (such as same-sex spouse) of a British citizen or of a permanent UK resident who is a member of HM Diplomatic Service, a member of employee of the British Council on a foreign visit of duty, or a member of staff of the Department for International Development

It is important to bear in mind that this second list of exceptions only is applicable to applications for indefinite leave to stay. If you are in one of these classes and would like to apply for citizenship, you will still need to sit the exam (unless you are under 18, over 65 or in one of the other classes in the first list of exceptions).

You must take great care not to misplace your test certificate as soon as you have passed the test. This is especially vital because as soon as you have passed the exam, you by no means need to take it again. For instance, if you pass the test once you are applying  for indefinite leave to stay, and afterwards at a later stage you desire to apply for citizenship, you do not need to take the test again.
